About

Dr Hannah Barham-Brown is a GP trainee in Yorkshire, an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Consultant and speaker, Governor of Motability and former Deputy Leader of the Women’s Equality Party with the portfolio for ‘Making Change Happen’. Between 2018 and 2022 she was a Council Member of the British Medical Association. Alongside her clinical and political work, she travels the world giving talks about diversity and disability. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and works to support disabled people in politics, employment, travel, health and education.

Before studying postgraduate medicine, she graduated from Durham University with a BA Hons in Combined Arts, and from Northumbria University with a BSc Hons in Paediatric Nursing. Hannah is an Ambassador of disability charity ‘My AFK’,  gynaecological cancer charity, ‘The Eve Appeal’, and the ‘Good Grief Trust’, as well as a ‘Role Model’ for the Lightyear Foundation, regularly works with national and local media, (including Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, BBC Breakfast and Sky News), and has given two TEDx talks on the need for diversity in the NHS, and being a #RollModel. She also co-hosted the ‘Salty Women’ Podcast with Olivier-nominated playwright and activist,  Athena Stevens. In April 2021, she was announced as an Ambassador for the Design Council, ‘in recogition of her leadership in progressing built environment practice’ with her work on Intersectional Accessibility.

Due to her work on closing the Gender Pay Gap in Medicine, diversifying the medical profession, and disability campaigning, Hannah has been named as one of the Health Service Journal’s 100 Most Influential People in Health, as well as  named on the Shaw Trust’s 2018, 2019 and 2020 ‘Power Lists’ – making her one of the 100 most Influential Disabled People in the UK.

This website is, due to Hannah’s somewhat packed diary, a tad neglected in terms of regular updates, but it shares some of her blog posts, reviews and revision notes from medical school – these may now be a tad out of date, but hopefully helpful!

If you’d like to book Hannah to speak at an event, write for your publication or to provide consultation services for your company, please email her at hello@hannahbarhambrown.com or track her down on Twitter @DrHannahBB. 1. How did you get confirmation that you have EDS, please? I am having “fun” with being tested for this 😦 I potentially have the vascular variant and therefore want some answers quickly!

    • Hello – I was referred to Rheumatology via my GP. I doubt many GPs would order the genetic testing for a vascular type, so it’s Rheum you have to see really. Good luck!
